The Story of the Origin of Shri Tungnath
The story of the origin of Tungnath is connected with the Epic of Mahabharata. It is said that Pandavas were in search of Lord Shiva as they have killed their relatives in the war of Mahabharata due to which they wanted Lord Shiva to pardon them. Lord Shiva kept avoiding them because they were guilty and disguised in the form of a bull but Bhim, One of the five Pandavas recognized Lord Shiva in that form. The moment Bhima grabbed the hump of the Bull, Lord Shiva (Bull) disappeared and appeared as Jyotirlinga. The parts of his body fell into different places. The place where his hands fell became the Temple of Tungnath. It is one of the most popular religious tourist destinations in Uttarakhand.

Tungnath Mandir is well connected with all the major towns and cities of Uttarakhand. You can reach here by indulging in a 3.5km trek from Chopta. It is situated in Gopeshwar- Guptkashi route and also connects Kedarnath to Badrinath Shrine.
- By Air – Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun is the closest airport to reach Tungnath. It is 233 km away from Tungnath.
- By Road- From Chopta You have to trek for a distance of 3.5 km to reach Tungnath Temple. From Kund Gopeshwar road up to Chopta the distance is 212km.
- By Rail- Rishikesh is the nearest Railhead to reach Tungnath Temple, it is 205 km away from Tungnath.
