About Kedarnath Temple
Kedarnath is one of the legendary sacred pilgrimages of North India located on the banks of the Mandakini River. Historically this place was known as Kedar Khand. This pilgrimage in the backdrop of picturesque Himalayas provides a view of breathtaking vistas along the way. Of the 200 Lord Shiva shrines located in India, Kedarnath is treated as the most important one. It is said that after the Pandavas won the Kurukshetra war they sought redemption from Lord Shiva, who eluded them in the Himalayas taking the form of a buffalo. Only glimpses of him were caught in a few religious places of which Kedarnath was one where the hump of buffalo was seen. Situated in the Garhwal range of the Himalayas, Kedarnath is only open till autumn. During winters the idol of the temple is carried down to the lower terrains of Ukhimath.
